The Director's Notebook
Ok, so you have chosen a play and are ready to go, so now what?
In this section we will look at the decisions we have made about approaching the text and the process that it is recommended you follow in order to have all the information and knowledge you will need to go about directing the play.
Section 1:
1. Read the play.
2. As soon as you have finished answer the questions at the top of the Text Response form: "Record your immediate visions, connections, ideas, feelings and challenges after reading the play for the first time. Annotate the text with images or text if this is helpful."
3. Read the play again.
4. Once you have read it a second time, complete the Text Response form and also look to answer the questions on the Art Form document. You should be constantly referring to the play during this process and will probably have read through a couple more times by the end of this.
5. Write a 200 word 'director's message' about your initial interpretation of the play as if for a programme for the production.
All of these responses should be recorded in your Journal/Blog
At this point you have gathered lots of information about the play and your responses to it.
Section 2:
You are now ready for the second section: your Intentions and Desired Impact. Use the Intentions & Impact form to help you record your ideas.
All of these responses should be recorded in your Journal/Blog
Section 3:
Right, you know the play and are ready to put this into action. It is time for you to show how you intend to bring all your ideas to you chosen moment(s) from the play. Remember that you must refer to live theatre you have seen and discuss how it has influenced you. This document will help you plan how you intend to create Tension, Emotion, Atmosphere and Meaning (TEAM) and allows you to reference Live Theatre that has inspired you.
All of these responses should be recorded in your Journal/Blog
Final presentation.
You now need to collate all of your work into 20 A4-sized pages ready for submission.
